The tropics bring favorable weather in the wintertime. Sunny skies, mild temperatures, and low moisture make subtropical areas an ideal place to vacation and stay. But even these ideal conditions can become challenging for the fish. This changes how anglers approach their day, and what we do to adjust to winter fishing Terra Ceia Bay.
When nighttime temperatures cool, mornings become a period of revival. Reduced water temperatures, late sunrises, and early sunsets create the perfect pattern for temperature-sensitive predators to go deep. - Spanish Mackerel
We’re catching them with spears, live bait, cast nets, and lures, and here are a few tips on how we’re doing it.
TIPS FOR WINTER FISHING TERRA CEIA BAY:
- Pay attention to water temperature. Changes in water temperature will affect the way each species of fish acts. Larger predatory prey will move into deeper waters leaving hearty, cold-resistant fish inshore. These species are equally as delicious and well worth the challenge.
- Change your location. The fish that remain inshore will take shelter near habitats and feeding grounds where they can survive limited food and fluctuating weather patterns. Learning where they go and being willing to change your location will be key to finding them.
- Don’t forget shrimp. These are the bait that every fish agrees to. They are sightly and delicious, and when resources are limited, a welcomed surprise. Local bait shops know these secrets and aim to keep you stocked on live and frozen shrimp until more bait options become available.
