Captain Erik’s Weekend Fishing Report

This is Captain Erik’s weekend fishing report you need to know, brought to you by Fisherman’s Cove RV Resort from Terra Ceia Bay, Florida, USA.

This week, we’re expecting some challenging weather conditions on Friday, with super duper north winds and cold temperatures. I’ve got my scarf on today because it is cold. The north wind will likely stir up the water and make it less clear, so look for that water clarity to go down quite a bit. But that’s not all bad news – this is a good thing for fishing. When the water is less clear, you can pump up your leaders and use a bit more leader length and a larger leader size for those extra nasty, spiny, cutty offey fish. Cold weather brings cold water fish such as sheepshead and black drum, so you’re bound to find many of these species despite the chilly temperatures.

TIP:  When the water is less clear, increasing your leader size is essential. This is because larger fish are more likely to be spooked when they can’t see as well. A larger leader will help to prevent break-offs when a fish makes a sudden run or jumps.

Saturday looks a little better, with the winds calming down and veering off to the east. The northeast winds will be pouring out of the northeast all day Saturday, but it will start bringing some better clarity.

TIP: Remember, when the wind blows out of the east, the water clarity rises and gets clear. This is especially nice for fishing on the beach. When the water is clear, you can use a lighter leader size and a more stealthy approach to target fish.

On Sunday, the east winds will be blowing all night Saturday night, and you’ll wake up to clear conditions and a little bit of weather that feels like it’s spring in Florida again. But we’ll have to wait and see what happens as we go into Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. It’s looking like it will be paradise for fishing, so if you’re not going to get out there and do some fishing in the cold, make sure you get your gear ready for next week because it’s going to be a hot one.

And if you’re planning to join us on February 11th here at Fisherman’s Cove RV Resort, we’ve got a big artificial reef project happening right here on this dock. It’s the biggest artificial reef project in Manatee County, maybe even all of Florida. We will host a kayak trash rodeo, raffling prizes, and more. Public parking is available at Sea Breeze Point, and resort residents are invited to join by kayak or simply coming out to the dock. You can find details on the events page of Fishlikeus.com, so take advantage of this exciting opportunity to help create a new fishing destination and to catch some big fish!
