Why Choose a Pet Friendly Community?

The People / Pet Connection

Blog published 4/24/25 by Fisherman’s Cove Waterfront Resort: Topic: Benefits of a pet friendly community

According to research, if you own a pet, you’re already a little happier and healthier than most people. Living in the presence of a devoted pet companion who sees the brighter side of EVERYTHING and loves you unconditionally are 2 clear reasons for being “happier. As far as healthier, the daily tasks of feeding, playing and walking your pet would certainly contributes to your overall health in a positive way.

Most research doesn’t solve the chicken and the egg question: Were people who acquired pets already happier and healthier? In other words, it’s not actually the pets that make pet owners happier and healthier over non pet owners. In fact, some research denies the existence of a clear correlation.  So why choose a pet friendly community?

Here's to your Health!

If you own a pet, the advantages of living in a pet friendly community are straight forward.

For starters, these communities may have fenced green space, or dog runs where your pet can exercise and play with other pets without restraint. It’s a set up that provides a SUPER charge to your dog’s daily physical activity supercharges. As well, for leash walks, these communities may offer walking paths or plenty of sidewalks. This takes the stress out of daily walks and encourages MORE WALKING! That’s good for all!

Other amenities that may be available are pet drinking stations, and waste disposal and wash stations.

Making Friends

Even better, consider the fact that you’ll be living in a community where there are like minded individuals. You’ll likely connect with new people and friends more easily over common interests and activities. For instance, while taking a stroll with your pet, conversations come more easily between people as they focus on your pet or vice versa.

The America Kennel Club summed up the importance of pet ownership activities in making friends. “Nowadays, dogs aren’t just man’s best friend — they can be instrumental in making new friends. A recent poll found that out of the 2,000 dog owners surveyed, nearly half of the participants made friends while walking their dogs.

FUN FACT: in the same AKC survey, 60 percent of owners think their dogs have their own furry friends! So perhaps that suggests that your pet might be happier with more critters around every corner. It’s safe to say that in a pet friendly community, there will be more critters!

“There’s simply not much research as to why dogs get a long so famously in open spaces or at dog runs, parks and beaches. I found it quite surprising when I witnessed it for the very first time on a dog beach in Chicago, IL.

I suppose that most of the time we see our dogs at home, growling and barking at every sound that’s out of pattern and every dog that’s simply walking by. They are on duty 24/7 protecting their assigned territories of home and human.

Take them to a dog park, however, and their territories are left behind. With nothing to protect, it becomes all about running, jumping, and romping around with all dogs big and small.

It’s amazing to see!
