Fishing FAQ

It’s important when picking a fishing spot to know what you’re in for. There’s no bigger disappointment than arriving at a kiddie pool when you thought you’d be fishing a lake. Here at Fisherman’s Cove Resort, we receive many questions regarding our location, fishing, and resort amenities. We’re here to answer your fishing FAQ.

Where are you located?

Fisherman’s Cove Resort is located at the south end of Tampa Bay in a historic location called Terra Ceia Island. Backing up to the Terra Ceia State Preserve, our resort has direct access to Terra Ceia Bay. Connected to Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, this water provides access to numerous local fishing spots.

Are you on the water?

Yes, we are on the water. Our private fishing dock, boat ramp, and view are just footsteps from your door.

What sort of fish can I catch there?

With direct access from the Gulf stream, we see every species, big and small nearby including:

  • Snook
  • Snapper
  • Redfish
  • Flounder
  • Shark
  • Mullet
  • Sheepshead

What about red tide?

We are hearing reports of red tide on the beaches north of us, but aren’t experiencing any effects in our area.

Do I need a license?

If you are a Florida resident, you can fish from shore for free. If you are traveling from out of state you will need to purchase a license. You can find details on the FWC website and can register online here.

What amenities are available for fishing?

We currently have a fishing dock and cleaning station complete with running water for those fishing from shore. Those with kayaks, boats, and other water toys, can utilize private boat ramp.

What fish can I keep?

Fish that are open year-round include mangrove snapper, sheepshead, speckled sea trout, cobia, hogfish, flounder, tripletail, Spanish mackerel, and triggerfish. Please refer to the Fishing Wildlife Conservation Commission for regulations on additional species.

Are there charters available for hire?

The closest and most personalized charter is located right here in our park! Fishlikeus.com runs pedal-driven kayak fishing charters and is providing experiences from bait to plate for those interested in learning. If you want to experience a fish story very few can tell, we highly recommend asking about their Gag Grouper charter.

Do you rent fishing gear?

We do not. But we are located less than a quarter-mile from a local bait shop that sells affordable rods and reels for travelers. The libraries in the area also rent rods for kids.

Is there a beach?

We are less than a half-hour from several world-renowned beach locations, including North Beach at Fort DeSoto, St. Pete Beach in St. Petersburg, and Siesta Key in Sarasota. And although there is not a beach on site, locals can direct you to several tucked away places to beach it for the day including dog-friendly sands.
